Forecasts, not promises. Everything here is based on forecasts from outside sources, mainly the Icelandic Met Office (Veðurstofa Íslands). Aurora and cloud cover can't be predicted with certainty, and Sky is Green is not responsible if the northern lights don't show.
Before you go
- This site is not a safety service. Check road conditions at umferdin.is and weather alerts at safetravel.is and vedur.is before you drive.
- Drive times are estimates. Winter roads can be slower, or closed.
- Never stop on the road to watch the lights. Use a parking place or pull-out.
- Driving off-road is illegal in Iceland. Respect private land.
- Advertisements are always labelled as sponsored and never change our recommendation.
- In an emergency call 112.
What this site is
Sky is Green combines forecasts and road information from other sources into a suggestion of where to look for the northern lights. Ratings and recommendations are our own calculation. They are not provider data, and they can be wrong. “No warning” means we see no warning, never that the way is safe.
Your responsibility
You decide whether to travel and how. Check the weather, road conditions and warnings at the official sources before you drive, and follow the instructions of the authorities. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss or damage that comes from using the site, or from the aurora not showing.
Where the data comes from
- Weather, aurora forecasts and warnings: Veðurstofa Íslands (the Icelandic Met Office).
- Road conditions and road sections: Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration), licensed CC BY 4.0.
- Driving times and routes: openrouteservice, with data from OpenStreetMap contributors.
- Map: MapTiler and OpenStreetMap contributors.
These providers do not endorse Sky is Green. The page shows where each set of data comes from and when it was fetched.
Advertising
There is no advertising yet. If it is added, it will be labelled “Sponsored”, it will never change a rating or a recommendation, and it will not be shown for a place we rate Unlikely or unsafe.
Using the site
Please use the site as a visitor would. Do not try to overload it or to get around its limits. We may change or stop the service at any time.
