Privacy

The short version
- No accounts, no advertising trackers, no cookies. We count page views with Vercel Web Analytics, which does not use cookies or follow you across sites.
- Your position is used in your browser to find the nearest starting point. It is never sent to us and never stored.
- Two small settings can be saved on your own device. They never reach us.
Who is responsible
Sky is Green is run from Iceland. For anything about your data, write to contact@skyisgreen.com.
Your location
If you tap “Use my location”, or you have already allowed it for this site, your browser works out where you are and our page compares that with a short list of named starting points (the airport, towns and places). Only the name of the nearest one goes into the web address, for example ?from=akureyri. Your coordinates are not sent to our servers, not put in the address and not stored. You can refuse, and the site then starts from Reykjavík or from no starting point at all.
What is saved on your device
We do not use cookies. We use your browser's local storage for two settings, which stay on your device and are not sent to us:
skyisgreen:location-choice: set to “declined” if you said no to using your location, so we do not ask again and again.skyisgreen:map-mode: how you chose to see the map (dots by aurora chance or by cloud, and the hour-by-hour panel).
They are needed for the site to work the way you set it. You can delete them at any time in your browser's settings.
Servers and logs
- The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel processes your IP address and technical request data to deliver the page and keep it secure. We do not link IP addresses to locations.
- Visitor statistics. We use Vercel Web Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they open, the country, device type and where they came from. It sets no cookies and does not store your IP address; Vercel says it uses a short-lived anonymous identifier made from technical request data to count visits. The script is served from this site. It is used only to understand and improve the site, not for advertising. See Vercel's notes on analytics privacy.
- Our database (Supabase, in the EU) holds weather, aurora and road data. It holds no information about visitors.
- Our routes interface counts requests per client to protect a paid service. It keeps only a keyed hash of the address and the date, not the address, and deletes it after two days.
Other services
- Map. The map tiles come from MapTiler. Your browser requests them directly, so MapTiler receives your IP address and which map areas you look at. See MapTiler's privacy policy.
- Driving times and routes. Our server asks openrouteservice for drives between named starting points and places. No position of yours is sent.
- Weather and roads. Our server gets forecasts from the Icelandic Met Office and road conditions from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. Visitors never contact them through us.
- Email. Mail to contact@skyisgreen.com is forwarded by ImprovMX to our inbox. We use it only to answer you.
- Fonts are served from this site, not from a font service.
Why we may process this
Running the website securely (logs, protection against misuse) is our legitimate interest. Using your position happens only because you allow it in your browser. We do not sell data and do not use it for advertising.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, and object to processing. Write to contact@skyisgreen.com. You can also complain to the Icelandic Data Protection Authority, Persónuvernd, or to the authority in your own country.
Changes
If the site starts to store or share something new, for example advertising or analytics, this page changes first and says so.
